IN MEMORY OF RICHARD METCALFE FISHER

13 January 1933 – 30 November 1986

R M Fisher Ltd has been in the Fisher family, and on the same site in Galgate, since 1956.  In November 1956 Richard (Dick) Metcalfe Fisher married Jean Kitchen, whose family had owned the garage previously, and Dick and Jean purchased the garage and site from her uncle.  In the early years Dick was in partnership with other people but from December 1979 he and Jean became the sole directors.  During the early years, Dick was a local sporting hero, combining a semi-professional career in speedway - riding for and captaining Belle Vue Aces in the 1960’s and riding in 3 World Finals – and building up his business. Sadly, in 1986 Dick passed away aged 53 from cancer.  After Dick’s early death, Jean threw herself into the business, which continued to flourish.  In 1988 Jean’s daughter, Janet Hilton, and her husband Brian came into the business and in 2003 became owners and directors on Jean’s retirement.

When Dick started in the motor trade in 1956, he sold fuel, did repairs and sold the occasional vehicle.  In the early 1960’s R M Fisher was appointed a BMC Dealer, selling Austin, Morris and Wolsey.  In 1973 the Company made the decision to change to a new Japanese franchise, Datsun (subsequently Nissan) and these proved to be very popular and reliable vehicles. After 12 years with Datsun, it was decided to change franchise to Vauxhall in 1985.

In 1999 we were appointed as a SEAT dealer. At that time SEAT vehicles made up 1% of the UK new car market, and in the Lancaster and district area there were 6 vehicles in total. Today that figure is an amazing 3% and we are so proud and excited that we have been part of SEAT’s success on this long journey – a true partnership.   We are the longest serving SEAT Dealer in Lancashire and over the last 21 years we have won many awards from SEAT and in 2017 were Number 1 out of 123 Dealers in the UK for Customer Satisfaction in both Sales and After Sales.   In both 2010 and 2011 R M Fisher  represented SEAT UK at the SEAT International Top People Awards in Spain – in 2010 Emma Clegg was the winner in the Service Adviser category and in 2011 Darren White was runner up in the Parts Adviser category.  As a family owned dealership (something quite rare these days) we pride ourselves on attention to detail and our focus is on the quality and value of the service the customer will receive.

On 23rd November 2017 Galgate was struck by a catastrophic flood from the River Conder.  At 11 p.m. that evening Brian, Steve and Sam were wading through waist high water trying to reach the garage.  Unfortunately, the whole building and our entire vehicle stock was consumed by the flood water.  By 7 a.m. on the morning of 24th November the water had gone and left everything covered in mud.  It was a terrible day but all our wonderful staff worked so hard cleaning, getting our communications working and we were up and running within a few days, albeit on a very limited scale.  This event, although very traumatic, was a catalyst as we decided to have new premises built.  Over the next 18 months we were faced with some very difficult working conditions, trying to build new premises whilst remaining open.  On the 16th May 2019 our brand-new state-of-the art premises was ready – what a sense of achievement we all felt and here it is – just fantastic and all ready to continue on our SEAT adventure into the 21st century and beyond.
